Heat Pump Thermostats |
The standard heat pump thermostat
Your thermostat is the "brain" that automatically controls the heating and cooling of your home. The standard heat pump thermostat is typical of those in many homes today, though setting controls and labels may vary.
The parts of your thermostat
Temperature setting
Set your thermostat by adjusting the temperature setting to a temperature that is most comfortable to you, usually between 68 and 72 degrees in the winter, and between 76 and 78 degrees for summer.
Fan settings
During normal operation the Auto fan setting allows the blowers to come on and shut off automatically with the heat pump. The On setting allows the fan to run continuously and can be used to circulate air. For example, you might use the On fan setting on mild spring and fall days when you don't need heating or cooling, but simply want to ventilate rooms.
Heat pump settings
The most commonly used heat pump setting is Auto. It allows the unit to run automatically, heating and cooling according to your desired temperature setting. Heat allows the unit to heat to the thermostat setting. Cool allows the unit to cool to the thermostat setting. The Off switch shuts down your heat pump completely so it neither heats nor cools. The Em Ht (emergency heat) switch allows the built-in backup heating system withing your heat pump to operate. This switch is used in an emergency, such as heat pump failure.
