Appliances are tested by operating the controls as a user would normally operate them on a daily basis.

Inspectors do not unplug appliances to test outlets, do not light gas pilot lights, and do not operate electric circuit breakers and water shutoff valves. Inspectors to not calibrate thermostats, timers, or clocks. Self-cleaning functions are not tested. Convection fans are tested but the actual convection function is not. The actual working function of the disposal blades was not determined; nothing was inserted into the disposal.

Trash compactors are run through a cycle to determine whether or not it is operational but are not tested for ability to actually compact trash.

Built-in microwaves are checked by heating a special microwave tester that gets hot after 15 seconds on the default power setting. Inspection, testing, analysis, or opinion of condition or function of countertop microwaves is not within the scope of a home inspection. Recommend consulting with seller concerning operation and maintenance of countertop microwaves that convey with property.
The dishwasher was tested by closing the soap dispenser, setting the rotating dispenser arms at a 12:00/6:00 position, and then using the shortest cycle.

The slots in the dishwasher air gap device at the sink serves to keep dirty water from the sink from backflowing into the dishwasher.
