Radon Gas is a gas that enters homes through the ground from cracks and openings in the floor. It comes from the breakdown of uranium in the soil. When exposed to elevated levels of Radon Gas for long periods of time, breathing problems or even lung cancer may develop.
Testing for radon gas is an easy process and if high levels of radon gas are found, it can be fixed. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection recommends that all homes be tested for radon.
In New Jersey, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has divided the state into three zones of possible radon potential.
Zone 1 (Red) counties have a predicted average indoor radon screening level greater than 4 pCi/L (pico curies per liter)
Zone 2 (Orange) counties have a predicted average indoor radon screening level between 2 and 4 pCi/L
Zone 3 (Yellow) counties have a predicted average indoor radon screening level less than 2 pCi/L
